Give it away, give it away, give it away now.
Give it away, give it away, give it away now.
Give it away, give it away, give it away now.
I can’t tell if I’m a king pin or a pauper.
Can you tell me what song this comes from? You can? Then what’re you waiting for?! Because the first person who names the title and band in comments wins a special secret prize as part of my kick-ass new contest.
Ah, I see your ears have perked up. Did I say… contest? Well, of course I did.
I happen to have in my hot little hands, thanks to my wondrous editor Anne Sowards, a galley for GRIMSPACE. This little beauty arrived today via FedEx, and I cried tears of joy. (No, really, I did. Ask Lauren). So of course, in my delirious excitement, I must mail it to someone else post haste. Tis this season, right?
I’m going to make this one simple because I can’t be arsed to think up something more involved. Would you like this signed ARC? Then show me the love. No, better yet — SHOW ME THE MONEY. No pansy drawings this time — the person who comments most on this post gets the ARC. I’ll mail it right to your house, months before you could buy in stores, along with a limited edition postcard of the cover art and a special Jax magnet. Is that avarice I see gleaming in your eyes?
If it is, if you want the fierce future-love explosion of goodness otherwise known as GRIMSPACE, then your topic is music — discuss your favorite songs, bands, what you’re listening to now, what artists you miss, where are they now questions, whatever. YouTube links to songs you like are permitted, but otherwise your comment should have content (no one word posts!) and/or respond to things already being discussed.
My next entry goes up the day after Christmas, which is when I’ll announce the winner. So what are you waiting for?! On your marks, set, go!

The song is “Give It Away” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I like U2, Coldplay, Jay-Z and Mozart. “With or Without You” and “Yellow” are some of my favorite songs. For Christmas, I’m listening to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I waiting for DMX and Coldplay to come out with stuff.
December 18th, 2007 at 4:54 am
“Give It Away” by “Red Hot Chili Peppers”
December 18th, 2007 at 6:15 am
I like such a wide variety of music i couldnt begin to name everyone i listen to.. i adore Toby Keith, Daughtry, Nickelback, George Straight, even find some Led Zepplin and the good old rock in my car cd holder..im listen to anything…
December 18th, 2007 at 6:18 am
Currently I’m listening to anything that is NOT Christmas. (I think they start playing the music too soon!) My favorites are Maroon 5 (Adam would make an awesome muse), INXS (I got to meet JD Fortune after he won and became the new lead singer), Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Little Big Town, Sugarland, Rascal Flatts, Gary Allen (he does have a very cute (sexy) Christmas song called Let’s Be Naughty and Save Santa the Trip).
December 18th, 2007 at 6:53 am
yeah Gary Allen is just plain sexy isnt he?
i wouldnt mind finding him under my tree…lol
December 18th, 2007 at 7:53 am
Woo-hoo, Ann! I can’t believe how fast time is passing. Before we know it, Grimspace is gonna be on the shelves! (And I can hardly wait!). Congrats to you!!
December 18th, 2007 at 8:19 am
Definately Jolene and of course I want the “naughty” version!! heehee But if Gary can’t make it I’ll take Adam from Maroon Five.
December 18th, 2007 at 8:35 am
Well, I wasn’t the first but I agree, it was the Red Hot Chili Peppers doing ‘Give It Away Now’.
December 18th, 2007 at 8:36 am
Win an ARC of ‘Grimspace’…absolutely, positively, yes!
December 18th, 2007 at 8:40 am
Right now I am listening to nothing but Christmas music until after the holiday season. I love this time of year and go all out with music, decorating, cards and festivities…love it, love it!!! My favorite is White Christmas and Silent Night, but I listen to them all whether at home, in the car or shopping.
December 18th, 2007 at 8:43 am
lol Shari.. i agree.. cant think of a better christmas gift than an arc of a good book..
December 18th, 2007 at 9:00 am
redhot chili peppers! love give it way now.
December 18th, 2007 at 10:23 am
Wow, Shari takes an early lead. She is committed to her gameplan!
Jane was first, so she needs to email me.
December 18th, 2007 at 11:10 am
I’ve been listening A LOT to Breaking Benjamin, they’re a rock band and their newest album Phobia is FANTASTIC. Seriously.
December 18th, 2007 at 11:12 am
Oh! Has anyone heard of them?? What’s your favorite song? I can’t choose! there’s Diary of Jane which is lovely, Breathe, the first song I listened and absolutely love, Dance with the Devil is also a kickass one and the last one which I can’t remember the name of is a melody with no singing and omygod, it’s so pretty!!
December 18th, 2007 at 11:14 am
Um. I should really stay away from cuban coffee - it’s strong!!
December 18th, 2007 at 11:16 am
Hmm, I need to check them out, Wendy. I haven’t heard those songs, but I’m intrigued.
My playlist right now is pretty eclectic. My newest discovery is Plain White T’s. I really dig the simple sweetness of Hey There Delilah.
December 18th, 2007 at 11:24 am
Ann, you should! they’re really good. And I’ve heard Hey There Delilah and it’s such a lovely song.
The other day I was watching Gossip Girl, one of the old episodes where Chuck wants to open a burlesque-type show and - have you guys seen this one? - where the girls are dancing to this song called stripper by the soho dolls and it’s been stuck in my head ever since! makes me want to burst out dancing at the most opportune moments.
December 18th, 2007 at 11:47 am
Listening to Diary of Jane now. This band has an edge that reminds me of someone else. I can’t place it, but it makes me want to go listen to Staind to see if it’s them.
Nice.
December 18th, 2007 at 11:52 am
I remember that band! Staind seems a bit darker to me than BB. Glad you like it.
December 18th, 2007 at 12:14 pm
I had to dig up a song to test my hypothesis. Listening to So Far Away now.
Yeah, they have a similar edge, I think.
December 18th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
I think you’re right but Staind seems more sad when Breaking Benjamin seems more angry. If that makes any sense at all, lol.
December 18th, 2007 at 1:07 pm
See what happens when I go shopping…..You all get chatty!
December 18th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
Dang it - I am horrible at music trivia, so the fact that I knew something and didn’t win makes me pout.
December 18th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
btw: I was good and bought NO new cd’s although Blake Shelton and Gary Allen sured looked tempting.
December 18th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
Unfortunately, I didn’t think to check this in the early AM - and was at work all day. I have a love/hate feeling towards the Red Hot Chili Peppers - but I do like “Give It Away” - but recently I’ve been listening to a lot more “chill” music - like Ingrid Michaelson, Imogen Heap, HEM, etc. (must be due to finals)
December 18th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
Does anyone out there remember Duran Duran? I sure would like to have a new cd by them. Simon face was plastered all over my locker in high school. (Dang–I think I’m showing my age).
December 18th, 2007 at 1:11 pm
But Anne - you didn’t specify that the comments have to make sense. ‘Cause really? Omigod the fun I could have. One word comments? Sure. Random images? Sure. Knock knock jokes? Um, gotta draw the lines somewhere.
Musically, I’m ecclectic. Everything but country, at least since my husbands last deployment. Something about bursting into tears every other song turned me off.
My hubby bought the Plain White Ts when their album first came out, then I got quite annoyed when they released that second version with Hey There Delilah on it. I loved it and it wasn’t on the stupid CD my husband had. Which is why I went to iTunes and bought just the song.
December 18th, 2007 at 1:12 pm
Dude, how can you not remember Duran Duran?
Um, why am I thinking someone from that band died? May have to go google.
December 18th, 2007 at 1:12 pm
Dude, I so remember Duran Duran.
Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf…
They were the masters of 80’s fashion.
December 18th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
I’m with Jane…love the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. They totally reinvented holiday music.
Thanks for the contest, Ann!
December 18th, 2007 at 1:24 pm
My favorite Red Hot Chili Peppers song is Love Rollercoaster. I loved that sequence in the Beavis and Butthead movie. But it’s also a really good love song.
December 18th, 2007 at 1:24 pm
Hey! The topic is clearly stated as music. You can have as much fun with it as you want, though, lots of leeway there. And yes, you can post Youtube links to songs, etc.
December 18th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Shari, I go wild with the holiday music, too. I listen to the Sirius holiday music channel all the time. But my favorite song is probably the “Heat Miser/Snow Miser” song from The Year Without A Santa Claus.
Anyone else like the music from those Rankin-Bass specials?
December 18th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
Laura, I was a huge Duran Duran fan (still am, in a nostalgic way). They’re the reason I saw BARBARELLA. Got together with a group of my high school friends back in the day to watch it just so we could hear the characters say “Duran Duran”.
god, what a surreal time it was in the 80’s….
December 18th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Is anyone here a fan of Electric Light Orchestra? I wish they were still making music. The band’s songs are so cinematic.
December 18th, 2007 at 1:33 pm
>Um. I should really stay away from cuban coffee - it’s strong!!
Wendy, I would love to try some authentic cuban coffee. Is there a particular brand or place to buy it you can recommend?
December 18th, 2007 at 1:34 pm
Clara, I just bought a Spanish holiday collection. Some of the songs are just super-fun. My favorite is:
Burrito sabanero
(Coro)
Con mi burrito sabanero
voy camino de Belén
Con mi burrito sabanero
voy camino de Belén
si me ven si me ven
voy camino de Belén
si me ven si me ven
voy camino de Belén
El lucerito mañanero
ilumina mi sendero
El lucerito mañanero
ilumina mi sendero
si me ven si me ven
voy camino de Belén
si me ven si me ven
voy camino de Belén
Con mi cuatrico voy cantando
mi burrito va trotando

Tuqui Tuqui Tuquituqui
Tuquituqui Tu qui Tu
Apúrate mi burrito
que ya vamos a llegar
Tuqui Tuqui Tuquituqui
Tuquituqui Tu qui Tu
apúrate mi burrito
vamos a ver a Jesús
(coro)
Basically, the singer is going to Bethelem with his/her little donkey. It’s the cutest song ever. Check it out here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=LJDOGVghym0
December 18th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
Clara, sure! there’s this coffee called Cafe Bustelo which I think is Arabic BUT you can make a really strong cuban espresso with. This is the one my mom uses and it’s really good, just be careful you don’t drink a lot because if you make it really strong, it really does pack a punch and it will make you jittery, believe me, lol.
There’s also another called Modelo you can use but I don’t think it’s cuban. I think this one called Pilon is actually cuban but I have no idea. What you can do is go to a bodega and ask them, they should know.
Ann, omygod, I know that song! and I called my mom over to asked her if she remembered it and she started singing it then I started singing and it was hilarious! Now I have it stuck in my head and my mom keeps humming it. It really is a cute song.
December 18th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
I know someone who likes ELO. Don’t know much about them. Do they have a song called “Evil Woman” or something.
December 18th, 2007 at 1:59 pm
Clara, I asked my mom and she said it’s very unlikely you can get authentic cuban coffee here but Bustelo seems the best choice. If you can find a cuban food store, you could maybe find it there but I’m not sure.
December 18th, 2007 at 2:04 pm
I faintly remember ELO.
Another of my recent discoveries is Ayo. I can’t remember who turned me onto her, but I super-mega-dig her sound. Very plaintive, soulful.
December 18th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
Has anyone heard of Feist?
December 18th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
The author, yes. The band, no.
December 18th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
I’ve heard of Feist. Her song is in an IPod commericial. She was on Saturday Night Live not too long ago.
December 18th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
The band’s lovely. I first heard her song “1 2 3 4″ in that ipod commercial and liked it a lot. The music’s very mellow and sweet.
December 18th, 2007 at 2:21 pm
You know, speaking of commercials, I’ve found two really cool songs that way. First is by Shiny Toy Guns / Le Disko. It’s in a Razr cell phone commerical here. Second is Strange Love by Little Annie. That one is from a remarkably clever Levis ad.
Both are indie artists, which I thought was interesting. What do you guys think about that? Indie songs being snatched up for ads, and the singers / bands coming to prominence that way? I thought the point of being indie was not to sell out to the man.
December 18th, 2007 at 2:30 pm
The whole indie music thing is kinda confusing. I’ve heard of people who stop listening to indie bands the second they get really popular which I think it’s so ridiculous.
it’s hard to believe that a band would want to stay indie and not care about getting a lot more popular or more money.
December 18th, 2007 at 2:33 pm
As I understand it, the quarrel is between lack of money versus loss of creative control. It doesn’t seem fair, though, to call someone a sellout because they want more people to hear their music.
As a creative type myself, I know it sucks to do my thing in a vacuum. I thrive on feedback, both good and otherwise, so I would imagine it’s the same for some of these musicians.
December 18th, 2007 at 2:40 pm
it’s not fair and those so-called “fans” shouldn’t say stuff like that if they were loyal to the band. They should want the band to thrive and get more fans instead of being so childish and calling them sell-outs.
December 18th, 2007 at 2:44 pm
Thanks for not making me feel like I’m so old. I kept seeing bands that my son listens too! Mute Math anyone?
I don’t think anyone had died from Duran Duran, just one of the orginal band members doesn’t perform with them anymore.
Another question to think about….Does anyone hear a song on the radio and think it would fit perfectly for a book their reading or have read?
December 18th, 2007 at 2:49 pm
My friend and I just got back from a clogging workshop and one of the routines we learned was to a song by DJ Bebo from Sweden(?). If you like DDR music you would probably like this group. Definately club music. You can see some of their music on You Tube. One of their songs is called Chihuahua (yest the dog). My kids like that one because we have a chihuahua. Another song that is called Amazing Life (this is the one we learned a dance to). Check this group out. They have an amazing stage set for their concert (Amazing Life) and the words are really powerful (even though they are repetitive).
December 18th, 2007 at 2:52 pm
Laura, I definitely do that when I’m writing. For instance, when I was writing Seven Days, the novella in Boundless, I must’ve played I Will Follow You Into the Dark a thousand times. It was the perfect encapsulation of the relationship between Dev and Teresa.
I wrote Grimspace over a year ago, was finishing up summer of ‘06. Let me look at my playlist and see what I was listening to back then. Looks like Placebo and Blue October. Here are some songs that influenced Jax and March
Hate Me - Blue October
Sound of Pulling Heaven Down
Because I Want You - Placebo
Song to Say Goodbye
Infrared
Blind
December 18th, 2007 at 3:11 pm
Blue October was a band my son introduced me to. They are really good. He keeps telling me about all these new bands and he wants their cds for Christmas. Problem is they are hard to find (I don’t shop internet much at all if any). Off to You Tube to check out these songs.
December 18th, 2007 at 3:11 pm
Infrared by Placebo is awesome!
December 18th, 2007 at 3:15 pm
Laura, have you thought about getting him a gift card at a music store? They could do special orders for him and it would save you some running around.
Wendy, I really dig that one too. It’s just evil-gleeful techno-punky goodness.
December 18th, 2007 at 4:00 pm
I was going to do that, but we really don’t have any good ones close by. But I may have to try that. I know Borders will special order music so that may be an option for him. He’s a teenager now so his “Santa list” is getting very specific! Some of these bands he likes are British and they take a little longer to come to the states.
I have been able to find a couple (eventually) at Wal-Mart or Target.
December 18th, 2007 at 7:20 pm
My favorite Christmas show/song is on! The Grinch is on and there is just something about that song “Your a mean one Mr. Grinch….” . (rats, now its stuck in my head)
December 18th, 2007 at 9:24 pm
>Burrito sabanero
Wow, that is one sweet act! The Brady Bunch has nothing on that kid. I’m sure I’ll be humming that tune in the shower tomorrow.
December 18th, 2007 at 9:26 pm
Wendy, thanks for the info! I’m going to buy me some Cafe Bustelo and listen to Burrito Sabanero all day long!!
December 18th, 2007 at 9:27 pm
>I know someone who likes ELO. Don’t know much about them. Do they have a song called “Evil Woman”or something.
Yes. I don’t know much about the band itself either…I just love the music.
December 18th, 2007 at 9:36 pm
>Both are indie artists, which I thought was interesting. What do you guys think about that? Indie songs being snatched up for ads, and the singers / bands coming to prominence that way?
I say more power to them. I, too, have discovered really cool music from commercials. Not just indie songs, but mod vintage sixties stuff a la “Beat at Cinecitta” (that’s the cd name…I strongly recommend it).
December 18th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
>Another question to think about….Does anyone hear a song on the radio and think it would fit perfectly for a book their reading or have read?
I have to say no, but I think about books I like being made into movies…then I start salivating for a bomb soundtrack!
December 18th, 2007 at 9:44 pm
>My favorite Christmas show/song is on! The Grinch is on and there is just something about that song “Your a mean one Mr. Grinch….”. (rats, now its stuck in my head)
ha ha, glad to hear I’m not the only one who has had that song stuck in my mind. Same goes for all that Rankin-Bass music. I watched it perhaps far too religiously for years. There’s some good stuff in there, though, music-wise. For what it is, y’know?
December 18th, 2007 at 9:50 pm
Thank you everyone for expanding my music vocabulary! I hope to check out some or all of these bands/musicians at some point.
December 18th, 2007 at 10:07 pm
Someone earlier mentioned Nickelback… I really love them. Funny story — when the song Photograph came out, I heard it on the radio. This line cracked me up: “How did our eyes get so red, and what the hell is on Joey’s head?”
For some reason it reminded me soooo strongly of getting together with my friends and watching… Friends. I can’t explain the utter nostalgia that Photograph evoked.
And isn’t it odd how a song can do that? Transport you back in time?
December 19th, 2007 at 5:32 am
Ann–Photograph is one of my favorite songs by Nickelback. I think it brings back memories for a lot of people.
December 19th, 2007 at 5:33 am
Clara–I’m the same way about books to movies. One I would really like to see is Overhexed by Vicki Lewis Thompson. That book was so funny and it would make such a cute movie.
December 19th, 2007 at 6:19 am
Just got back from taking my kids to school and a local radio station was playing a parordy Christmas song called ‘Do You Smell What I Smell?’ Very funny.
December 19th, 2007 at 9:10 am
I can’t tell if I’m a king pin or a pauper.
Is THAT what they’re saying? I thought it was, “How come everybody wanna keep it like a pauper?”
At least I got ‘pauper’ right.
My whole creative life revolves around music, so I won’t even get started on bands (my next book has a playlist right after the title page–’nuff said).
Regarding the “sellout” question, I think it depends on how “indie” the bands are. If they set themselves up as fiercely independent and anti-corporate and then turn around and use their music to sell a product, then they’re hypocrites. Otherwise, more power to them.
December 19th, 2007 at 9:43 am
Clara, you’re welcome!
Hi, Jeri! I love when books come out with their own certain playlists, it’s so great looking up the songs!
December 19th, 2007 at 12:38 pm
Jeri, I’m gonna have to check out your book when it comes back. I’m curious now to see what bands you have listed that I listen too and what bands I can find that are new to me!
December 19th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
Laura, I highly recommend Jeri’s books. She’s a phenomenal author.
Today we just bought the Simpsons movie soundtrack. My son loves Spider Pig.
December 19th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
Oh yeah, spider pig. That song has been sung several times today at our house and we don’t even have the movie!
Now the latest song going through my head is I Want An Alien For Christmas by Fountains of Wayne!!!! argh!
December 19th, 2007 at 3:06 pm
Speaking of soundtracks, my new favorite one is from SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sympathy_for_Lady_Vengeance
The movie is not for the faint of heart, but the soundtrack is very haunting. It’s one of the few soundtracks where I remembered the music long after the movie was over.
Anyone else have a favorite soundtrack wearing out his/her CD player?
December 19th, 2007 at 3:10 pm
>(my next book has a playlist right after the title page—’nuff said).
Jeri, I just surfed over to your Web site…pretty amazing excerpt from Eyes of Crow!
I saw that in author Linnea Sinclair’s newest release, The Down Home Zombie Blues, that she had music lyrics following the title page. Jeri, in addition to your revelation, this made me wonder how something like that comes about. Do you have to beg and plead for the extra page space or is your editor like, okay, go ahead and add it…??
December 19th, 2007 at 4:00 pm
I haven’t picked up a good soundtrack in a long while. I got Hairspray because my daughter’s gymnastic team did their “show” routine to one of the songs. It’s pretty good. I love the music from the original movie and the soundtrack from the new one is differant. I was kind of surprised that the music from the new movie/broadway show was so differant (not using songs from the orginal movie).
December 19th, 2007 at 4:01 pm
One soundtrack that I have the cassette tape of but I need to find a cd of is the Broadway musical Big River (based on the Adventures of Huck Finn). Beautiful music and the musical itself is one of my all time favorites.
December 19th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
Jeri, in addition to your revelation, this made me wonder how something like that comes about. Do you have to beg and plead for the extra page space
Clara, the playlist for WICKED GAME was the idea of the Barnes & Noble buyer, the person who tells B&N how many copies to order and decides on things like front table placement, etc.–basically, one of the the most important people in the entire bookselling process. She loved the book and wanted a list of all the songs mentioned in the text.
I was thrilled to do it. When the chains say ‘jump,’ you don’t ask ‘how high?’ You grab a pogo stick.
The cool part was picking out songs, because sometimes it would just say “a Dylan song” or “a Liz Phair tune.”
Lyrics are a different matter, because you have to get permission from the artist and often have to pay. Just listing song titles doesn’t cost anything, because titles aren’t copyrighted.
BTW, I’ve read GRIMSPACE, and it’ll knock your socks off! I heart Sirantha Jax. Whoever wins this ARC is a lucky duck.
(And I’m dying to read DOWN-HOME ZOMBIE BLUES.)
December 19th, 2007 at 6:22 pm
When the chains say ‘jump,’ you don’t ask ‘how high?’ You grab a pogo stick.
Lol!
December 19th, 2007 at 7:53 pm
Wendy–I agree. lol that is such a great quote Jeri.
December 20th, 2007 at 4:08 am
The playlist is a cool idea. I could brag that I’ve got an advance copy of WICKED GAME, but I won’t. Oh, wait, does that count as bragging?
So what’s the last song you listened to? For me, it was Hate Me by Blue October.
December 20th, 2007 at 6:16 am
Ann it’s only bragging if you followed it with a rasberry
.
Last song I listened to is Coming Back in a Cadillac by Joe Nichols. We learned a clogging routine to it last night so now it is also the current song stuck in my head. Fortunately it’s a good song that I don’t mind listening to over and over again, at least for now.
December 20th, 2007 at 8:19 am
man, that’s my favorite Red Hot Chili Peppers song. Seriously. So excited for you Ann! Woot! You go girl!
December 20th, 2007 at 9:13 am
Ann, don’t brag in front of us poor readers that haven’t read the book! lol
Last sing I listening to is You by Breaking Benjamin. Heh, that’s not quite surprising huh?
December 20th, 2007 at 12:36 pm
I’m going to have to keep a notebook by my computer so I can write down all these “new” groups people are listening to. So many new groups for me to check out! Thanks Ann for this blog! This is really a lot of fun!
December 20th, 2007 at 5:03 pm
I have just learned from my extremely well informed son that Duran Duran just released their newest cd. Woohoo!
December 20th, 2007 at 10:42 pm
Oooh, I heard that about Duran Duran.
Hm, things are getting quiet. I bet someone sneaks in on Christmas when they have time off and steals this thing! Better keep an eye on the post.
December 21st, 2007 at 5:30 am
Fortunately Ann, I’m home all day Christmas since family is coming to our house. So I’ll be sneaking in all day to check.
Do you think we’ll make it over 100 posts?
December 21st, 2007 at 8:36 am
Honestly, I think there’s a good chance. Still several days to go — it doesn’t close until next Wednesday when I announce the winner.
December 21st, 2007 at 9:53 am
Good morning everyone!!
December 21st, 2007 at 9:56 am
So here’s a question - what movie do you want to see that has or will come out recently??
I want to see PS: I Love You, because apart from that it seems like a lovely feel-good movie, there’s Gerald Butler (although whenever I hear him talk, I remember my ex because he’s Scottish too!) AND Jeffrey Dean Morgan from Supernatural and Grey’s Anatomy which is SOOO CUTE, heh.
December 21st, 2007 at 9:58 am
I want to see I AM LEGEND with Will Smith and ENCHANTED. The latter just came out here, and the former hasn’t come out yet.
My husband wants to see ALIEN VS PREDATOR 2.
December 21st, 2007 at 10:01 am
Oooh, I AM LEGEND looks good! I’d like to see AVSP 2, too but I haven’t seen the first one so..
Lookit! even the cover’s cute!
December 21st, 2007 at 10:02 am
It’s not showing!

Wow, that’s a very sexy picture. It could be on a romance novel! I’ve seen a trailer for this on Amazon of all places. I must admit I’m curious.
December 21st, 2007 at 10:25 am
It is! I think the film’s based on the book by Cecelia Ahern although I actually haven’t heard it’s based on it but there’s too many similarities to be just a coincience.
December 21st, 2007 at 10:29 am
A friend of mine is saw I Am Legend and wasn’t impressed. My kids saw Enchanted and loved it. Even my 11 y/o son whose tasted typically center on Naruto, Pokeman, and Star Wars.
December 21st, 2007 at 10:31 am
PS I Love You is based on the book. That is the cover of the Mass Market Book. I’ve seen it at Wal-Mart. It is being marketed as a romantic comedy, but from reading the back I think there are some real tear jerker moments.
December 21st, 2007 at 10:32 am
Well, if Gerard Butler is in it, I think it’s definitely worth a look. Yum!
December 21st, 2007 at 10:33 am
I kind of want to see Sweeney Todd but I’m not much of gore movie type person. But it is Johnny Depp so that does help with enticing me. I also want to The Chipmunks movie. I love Jason Lee. I just hope they do better with it than with Garfield.
December 21st, 2007 at 10:37 am
Anything with Butler in it mist be good, lol.
OH! Sweeney Tood! How could I forget. And the Chipmunks looks adorable although I think that after 15 minutes their little voices would get pretty annoying.
December 21st, 2007 at 10:56 am
Wendy your right about Butler! I do kind of want to see the movie, but I’m not sure until I know that it is more comedy than tears. I keep picking up the book and then put it right back down again after reading the blurb.
Oh, I forgot about the other bonus to that movie—Harry Connick, Jr.
I think I’m talking myself into seeing this movie.
December 21st, 2007 at 11:00 am
Ann and Wendy–If you want to know more about this movie check this out (main contain spoilers, but when I read it not more than what was on the blurb on the back of the book).

December 21st, 2007 at 11:04 am
Laura J - yeah I want it to be more of a comedy than a tear-jerker. I read a book of Ahern before and didn’t really like it so I haven’t read PS I LOVE YOU.
I was just checking that site!
December 21st, 2007 at 11:29 am
The movie trailer they are showing on tv looks really good and the cast for it is awesome. I will probably give in and go see it. I honestly can’t tell you what the last movie I saw in the movie theatres was. Probably the Traveling Pants.
I’ve not read any of her books. I’ve picked them up and then put them right back down again. PS I Love though keeps pulling at me. hmmmmm….maybe it’s the cover.
December 21st, 2007 at 1:09 pm
I’ll probably wait until it comes out in DVD.
I can’t even remember the title of the book, it was okay, I think I still have it.
December 21st, 2007 at 2:01 pm
Wendy, Do you have a shelf full of books like me? I think I have over 800 now, but a friend of mine has 14,000 or more (in a 2 bedroom apartment). It must have been pretty bad if you can’t remember the name of the book. I have had a couple of books like that. It’s not that they were bad, they just leave enough of an impression on me to remember them.
We have Netflix so like you I’ll probably wait. Much easier if I don’t like it to just turn it off instead of walking out of the theater.
December 21st, 2007 at 2:11 pm
Laura J, I definitely do, I’ve had to add shelves to it over the years although I think I only have around 600, maybe 700, I’m not sure. That’s a lot of books!! lol.
Yeah, it wasn’t good I think I still have it and that’s only why because I hate throwing books away!
We used to have Netflix but since we were so both with school and work we cancelled it. It’s a pretty great company.
December 21st, 2007 at 2:14 pm
I meant both so busy.
December 21st, 2007 at 2:31 pm
Let’s see:
SWEENEY TODD
THE GOLDEN COMPASS
ENCHANTED
WALK HARD
CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR
Can you believe I haven’t seen a movie in the theatre all year???? And we have AMC Theatre gift cards, so it’s not the money, it’s the time.
Netflix is the best thing ever. I remember when I first joined (7 years ago), I sent them an e-mail telling them how awesome they were and begging them not to go belly up like all the other dot coms.
December 21st, 2007 at 2:36 pm
Speaking of movies, has anyone ever visited Rottentomatoes.com? It gathers movie reviews from all over the country and the internet and tells you what percent are positive. I like it because it lets me see a balanced view.
Also, it’s a major time waster, because it’s fun to read the reviews of bad movies.
December 21st, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Jeri, I can believe that, I haven’t being to a theater in years myself.
thanks for giving me yet another reason to procrastinate! lol.
December 21st, 2007 at 4:22 pm
I lurve Rotten Tomatoes. I check there before I go see a film. A bad rating doesn’t always stop me, but like in the case of ENCHANTED, which has a super-high rating score, it makes me doubly desirous of seeing it!
December 21st, 2007 at 7:44 pm
I love ELO, too. Who wouldn’t get a charge out of “Evil Woman”? I feel like her at times!
I also like “Fire on High”. It’s an instrumental. One time I was listening to it on my walkman (dating myself big time here) on a Chicago el, going into the underground. It was playing the final coda and just as the train was entering the tunnel, the song finished in perfect sycronicity. Sycronicity? Isn’t that a Police album? I loved them too. I also am a big Survivor, REO Speedwagon, and Journey fan. Love my Led Zepplin. Can’t get too much into the stuff today- find it all noise pollution- either it’s real good to me or super bad!
December 21st, 2007 at 8:40 pm
Jeri–I want to see Charlie Wilson’s War too. I forgot about that one.
Thanks for recommending another “time waster”
I’m going to have to check that one out tomorrow. When I’m more awake.
December 21st, 2007 at 8:41 pm
Wendy–I have a hard time throwing away books too. I do share and occasionally trade with people, but being the pack rat that I am, most stay with me.
December 21st, 2007 at 8:47 pm
Hi Laura K. you and I must be close to the same age (28, right?
) Those were the some of the same bands I listened to. I was talking to some friends tonight about REO Speedwagon. They are going to be at the local casino here in a few weeks. I had bought their latest cd and they aren’t as good as the used to be.
I pretty much listen to country these days, but I still like the “classics”. (Now I’m showing my age). Eagles, Police, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, Kiss. Oh wait those last two are still around aren’t they?
December 21st, 2007 at 9:18 pm
ELO fans should check out the soundtrack to XANADU (now I’M showing my age!). Half ELO, half Olivia Newton-John, 100% roller skatey goodness.
I like a lot of new bands, but not as many as I did ten years ago. Of the new ones, I love My Chemical Romance, AFI, Chevelle, Incubus, Nine Inch Nails (not new, but still making great music), Green Day (ditto) and Evanescence. (Female dark fantasy writers are required to love Evanescence. It’s a thing.)
I might get to the movies with my mom and MIL the day after Christmas. Fingers crossed I won’t go through all of ‘07 without a cinematic experience!
December 22nd, 2007 at 6:48 am
Jeri, I remember going to the skating rink as a pre-teen skating to the music from Xanadu.
My son is a huge Green Day fan and my husband likes Evanescence. Both very good bands.
December 22nd, 2007 at 7:44 am
it was the red hot chilie pepers. r how ever its spelled.
from looking at the comments, you have alot of them. wow.
love the music of today, listening to vh1 on tv doing the fav. 40for the year. some awesome music happened this year.
December 22nd, 2007 at 8:14 am
Laura J - I’ve heard about trading a lot but not since a week ago did I try it, and it’s fun!
Jeri - I really like Evanescence too!
December 22nd, 2007 at 8:38 am
It’s a good way to get out of print books or ones that are very hard to find, plus it does clear up some of the stacks. Only problem is I’m bringing in more books than sending out.
I think the folks at Border’s know me now. If not they will in January where I have a very large list of new releases that I want that are coming out that month.
December 22nd, 2007 at 12:33 pm
Haha, yeah I guess that’s a problem.
There’s a lot of January releases! I can’t wait.
December 22nd, 2007 at 4:33 pm
Just saw Enchanted at the theater today. My god, it was lovely! Soooooo good. It’s worth the high rating it’s got on Rotten Tomatoes. It goes instantly on the list of movies I could watch again and again.
If you only see one movie out this holiday season, go see Enchanted. I want to tell y’all all about but I don’t want to spoil anything. It’s just too magical. Puffy heart love, two thumbs up, whatever.
GO SEE IT!
December 22nd, 2007 at 6:57 pm
My husband’s cousin (he is in his 50’s btw) went to see The Chipmunk movie and has raved about it. He liked it so much he has seen it twice and is thinking about going again. My sister in law is taking my kids tomorrow to see it, so hopefully I will get some much needed Christmas work finished up.
I’m sure we will have Enchanted on DVD when it comes out. My kids loved it too!
December 23rd, 2007 at 12:18 pm
With three days to go, WHO will take home the prize? I’m getting excited. I’m gonna get this mailed before I go on vacation.
December 23rd, 2007 at 2:07 pm
Vacation? That sound so nice Ann. I’m taking a break from wrapping up the kids stuff while my sister in law and mother in law are at the movies with them They went to see Alvin and The Chipmunks! I’ll get their review when they get home.
December 23rd, 2007 at 4:28 pm
Hi, everyone!! Has anyone seen The Simpsons movie?? I just brought the DVD this morning for my dad - he LOVES the simpsons!
So, has anyone watched it? What did you think?
December 23rd, 2007 at 5:41 pm
Wendy, I haven’t seen it yet, but my kids want to. Not sure if I really want them to see it or not. The commercials for it drove nuts. My kids sang Spidey Pig for weeks.
I’m curious if other have seen it and what they think too, since my kids really want to see it.
December 23rd, 2007 at 6:06 pm
I’ve seen the commercials and frankly the spidey pig thing cracked me up, I can’t wait to watch it.
December 23rd, 2007 at 6:10 pm
Ugh! I was going through my bookshelf today and I’ve got so many books to trade! Has anyone heard of that paperbakswap deal? Does it work?
December 23rd, 2007 at 6:11 pm
I meant - http://www.paperbackswap.com/index.php
December 23rd, 2007 at 6:12 pm
It loooks good, I’m just not sure.. it’s different trading with a friend then with a total stranger.
December 24th, 2007 at 6:29 am
Wendy, I have books on paperback sway (just a few left). I haven’t had any major problmes and I have been able to get books I wouldn’t have found otherwise (a couple were out of print). I have sent books as well and it is real easy.
They have changed the way you get credits from when I first started, but basically you post so many books then you get credits to start with. When someone takes a book off your “shelf” you have so many days to reply that you will send it and then after that you have so many days to send it. When the book is received by the requestor you get another credit to get another book. When you are ready to send the book you can print the wrapper with the address of who you are sending it to. There is even a way you can put stamps on it from home (you have to have money in your account on pbs). I usually just take it to the post office. I also go ahead and do first class so that it gets to the person quicker. It’s only a few cents more usually.
I have only had one problem since I found pbs and that was one person never responded to my request to send a book. Fortunately there was another person who had the book and after the time was up for the first person to accept, it went to the next person in line.
You don’t have to go to the site everyday to see if anyone has requested your books. I get an email notice when one is taken.
It is also a good place to check reviews of books. I like it to see what others think of certain books I might be interested in.
The people who started this also have trade site for cd and they just started one for dvds.
December 24th, 2007 at 8:55 am
Good morning!!
It does sounds good but I’ve rather trade with people I know, it’s easier that way because I know they’re not going to try anything sneaky on me LOL.
December 24th, 2007 at 9:18 am
Wendy– I just listed the minimum books to get started because I was leery like you. But I have nothing but good (with the one small exception). I always receive my books within a week of them saying they will mail it. I have a friend who introduced it to me and she buys credits (each credit is about $2.50 or close to that). She has gotten lots of books from there and never had a problem.
Another place you might want to check out is a forum I go to called bookobsessed.com it is a “sister” site of bookcrossing.com. I don’t really do any trading with Bookcrossing but I keep a list of my books on there (I have heard a lot of complaints with people that trade on bookcrossing). On Bookobsessed there is a forum where we talk about books, participate in exchanges (Valentine’s Day, Boxing Day, etc), there are virtual book boxes where when you take a book out someone sends you that book and you add one (or however many you take out) to the list and then when someone takes out your book you mail it to them. We also have pages where we talk about upcoming releases, books to movie news. We have even had a couple of authors (hint, hint authors) join us and tell us about their upcoming books! Last summer a friend of mine and I went up to Columbus Oh to a meetup where we traded books (loads of fun and it took a few hours and then went to a couple of bookstores together). This is really a nice group, smaller than bookcrossing so fewer problems. If you go and want to join sign up for bookcrossing first (free and you don’t have to do anything with that list) because it makes it easier to signup with you join bookobsessed (if your a member they automatically admit you–they are trying very hard to keep out spam and so far it’s working). If you go I’m ctgmom on there.
Ann when does Grimspace come out? I’ll make sure I add it the list of upcoming books.
December 24th, 2007 at 9:34 am
Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about book swap sites. They won’t send them to Mexico!
Grimspace releases on Feb 26, 2008, Laura. Thanks for doing that!
December 24th, 2007 at 11:36 am
Ann Check out Bookobsessed.com We ship anywhere!!! Some swaps are US only but there are a lot of people from all over. I’ve sent to Sweden, England and Venezuela.
I’m happy to add it!
December 24th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
Laura - thank you! I’ll definitely check those sites out.
December 24th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
Oohh, Grimspace releases on the month of my birthday!
December 24th, 2007 at 2:15 pm
Let me know if you go by Bookobsessed and I’ll make sure I get you introduced! Wednesday will be pretty wild as that is opening day for Boxing Day Exchange.
We are heading out for my birthday dinner and there will be some margaritas involved!!!
December 24th, 2007 at 2:39 pm
I’m checking the whole thing right now.
Happy Birthday! hope you have a wonderful dinner.
December 24th, 2007 at 5:21 pm
Thanks Wendy! I just got back and it was wonderful! Very good (and very large) margarita! My daughter (6yo) decided it would be fun to tell them it was my birthday and then how old I am. The little stinker.
December 24th, 2007 at 8:36 pm
LOL! it says on bookobsessed that it’s your birthday today and also your age!! in case you didn’t know, lol.
December 25th, 2007 at 8:12 am
Thanks Wendy!!! Yeah there is something messed up with their calculator on figuring ages. I’m really 28 (again). Did you signup? If you did what is your name on there?
Merry Christmas Everyone!!!!!
December 25th, 2007 at 8:19 am
Merry Christmas! I’ll definitely check out BookObsessed. That could be great for me!
Now I need to get back to cooking our feast.
December 25th, 2007 at 8:41 am
Laura - LOL! yeah you better set them straight with your age, there hahah. I haven’t sign up, I’m not sure yet.
Merry Chrismas!
December 25th, 2007 at 1:00 pm
Lurk as long as you want. It took me a while too (the origial site was shut down by the owner who basically got bored and didn’t ask if anyone else would want to take it over–big mess and long story). It’s a pretty fun group with the ususal stuff.
Ann—-are you sure it could be “good” for you?
It’s not called obsessed for nothing!!! Believe me my tbr has grown considerably since becoming “obsessed”.
December 25th, 2007 at 10:57 pm
The clock has wound down and we have a winner. I’m now locking comments because it’s midnight, my time. Look for the big announcement in my post later today.
Hope everyone had fun with this contest. Thanks so much for making it a rousing success! Merry Christmas everyone.
