I think by now you all know how crazy I am for Halloween. October snuck up on me, though! September kind of went in a whirlwind. I’m hoping October will be more relaxing, thank you very much.
To me one of the best spooky elements of a good Halloween story is a castle. Castles have always been a part of my world. From the time I was little I loved castles. When I was a teenager I read gothic romances where a castle or fortified manor house or some other amazing haunted edifice was a centerpiece to the story. I’ve certainly written about castles before, and in my current work in progress, a huge castle is also a part of the world. Why am I obsessed with them? Could it be in my genes? Since my ancestors hail from Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales and France, it makes sense. My travels through Britain and Ireland showed me that amy obsession was a forever thing. I was lucky enough to see many castles and even stay in a pseudo-castle.
I also discovered a few short years ago that a branch of my family has a long history with Picton Castle in Wales. The Phillips family. I wish I’d known that when I was traveling in Wales. I would have stopped there and introduced myself.

I think these huge buildings, with their mysterious shadows, dark hallways, endless staircases, and desolate dungeons will always draw me back.
Have you visited any castles? And if so, did you find them beautiful? Scary? Haunting?

I’ve never been lucky enough to actually visit a castle, but I’ve always been fascinated and haunted by pics of them, and the thought of all the history that it’s walls hold. I LOVE reading about them, can almost feel and smell the atmosphere. ONE day I’ll get to Ireland and Scotland to visit some castles of my own!!
