This blog today has nothing to do with writing, I’ll admit. I didn’t get up in the morning thinking, hey I’m gonna talk about Lindsay Wagner’s hair today. The topic came to me when my hair actually worked the way I wanted it to (believe me, my hair cooperating is an amazing and rare experience so I have to commemorate it). So here it was the day I uploaded this blog:

Okay, remember the 70’s? All right, maybe you don’t. Depends on how old you are. If you’re my age, (46 at this posting), you remember the 70’s unless you were smoking pot or taking some other illegal substance that altered your experience so much it is all a blur.

Witness a flatter hair day just above. Oy!!
Seventies hair was dominated by three ladies. Farrah Fawcett, Lindsay Wagner, and Dorothy Hamil. I never wanted Dorothy’s hair. It wouldn’t have looked good on me anyway, and I think you have to have thick, coarser hair to carry it off. I always wanted Farrah Fawcett’s hair, but was realistic enough to realize my hair was never going to do that, especially not with the hair products available to me at the time. My all time favorite was Lindsay Wagner’s hair. As it turned out, the only time I even came remotely close to having her hairstyle was when I was fourteen and had long hair and slept in two braids with curlers in the ends. That wave stayed in all day. Any other attempt at curling, feathering or otherwise mucking with my hair resulted in…NOT that hair.
Well, the ‘00’s are here and 70’s hair is back baby. Even young men are wearing 70’s hair. Once in a while I have to pinch myself to make sure I haven’t time traveled back to junior high and high school. Luckily for me, I can get a tiny bit of that Lindsay Wagner effect in my hair through curlers, a good hair cut, and plenty of hair spray and other products. Okay, it doesn’t look ANYTHING like her hair. Wrong length and wrong color, too. But at least I’m having a great hair day and that means something, right? Yes!!!

These days my hair is fine…very fine and much thinner due to a scalp condition. Not that I ever had thick hair, mind you. This morning I took curlers out and happy day the hair did what I wanted it to do. Quick!!! Get the hairspray. Having shellacked my hair into submission, I’d be good for the rest of the day if a big wind didn’t arrive. So what is your hair like and does it ever cooperate for you?
Tell me and you could win a free download of INSTINCT, a novella in my SIA series at Ellora’s Cave www.ellorascave.com. I’ll announce the winner this evening.

I can so relate to your hair experiences. I have very thick hair that is naturally wavy (and on most days frizzy), and have a lot of it. I can never grow my hair long because it gets too big (and not in a good way). I have always wanted long hair. I guess just like people who have thin hair want thicker hair, and people who have curly hair want straight hair. Grass is always greener…
Much to my dispair it does not cooperate on most days…so I pull it back. Not very glamourous, but is more attractive then letting it go wild…eek.
However when I do happen to have a good hair day, it will usually last until I wash it again. I have good hair memory which is great on good hair days, and horrific on bad ones, either way it is better than having no hair.

Hi Booklover!! Yeah, I think you are totally right about people with curly hair wanting straighter and the other way around. We have a tendency to want what we don’t have. I’ve told everyone that if my hair grew back where I have a lot less I wouldn’t even care if it was white! Just grow back. LOL.

well, Denise my hair used to be very curly, long. was great in the 80’s when big hair was in, although I hated it. Now, after kids its just not the same, not as big! although the fuzzies still bother me in the humidity….not looking forward to the heat in DC…gonna be bad hair for sure!

I also have long very very thick curly (and sometimes frizzy) hair. When I was a girl, all I wanted was long straight black hair. But I also wanted Farrah and Lindsay Wagner hair. Hell, I just wanted to BE Lindsay Wagner. She totally rocked.
I agree that you always want what you don’t have. Folks are always telling me they’re jealous of my hair. It’s always the ones with the beautiful straight hair, LOL. That I want.

LOL, I SO remember when I was little my sister and her friends getting the Doroty Hamill cut…I haven’t thought about that in years. But I always wanted Farrah’s hair….and body, lol.
My has it’s days….I just got about 5 inches cut off, though, because it was so long and heavy it was doing nothing…it feels wonderful now. Just long enough to get it up off my face when I work.
But color?? Now that’s a whole other ball game. I’m 38, and the grey it taking over!! Ugh.

I have totally boring hair, Denise! It’s relatively thick and mostly straight. Right now it’s long, and I pull it back into a ponytail just about every day. I can totally relate to wanting what you don’t have–I would have killed for bouncing ringlets in my youth! Slept in all kinds of rollers, the whole works… My hair just isn’t the right texture to hold a curl well. Alas…

I can so relate, Denise. My hair has always been stick straight, but the last few years it has totally thinned out too, which makes any kind of hairstyle a lesson in frustration. If I am lucky, I might get a style to last maybe an hour, before it magically just disappears, lol.

During my teen years I had Billy Idol hair, and then sometimes no hair, then a blue mohawk, then a black one, then no hair again. That was in the 80’s. the 90’s I had really long perfectly curly red hair ala Julia Roberts. Then when I had my baby girl I cut it all off, because lo and behold hormones kicked in and I know longer had perfectly curly hair, it was now frizzy.
Then I grew it out again to my butt, and I discovered the straightening iron. What a marvelous invention. Then I cut it off again, that was last year. Now I’m rocking a chin length reverse bob adn it’s red red red.

I have straight hair and have never been able to curl it. Luckily the humidity doesn’t make my hair come alive. I like to keep it short because it’s easier to manage.

Hi Juliana! Humidity helps my hair, but my scalp hates it! Can’t win. LOL. My hair was big in the 80’s, too. Makes me wish I could get big hair now. LOL.

Speaking of Farrah, I just saw on the news that she passed away. Rest in peace, Farrah.

Tina,
My hubby has always liked my hair longer rather than shorter.

Melissa,
Since I can’t color my hair anymore, it’s a medium brown. Can’t tell from some of these pictures, because in some light my hair looks red. Which is what I was coloring it. Love red!

Jane,
Humidity gives my straightish hair more bounce and thickness, so that is a plus for me. I don’t get frizzy from humidity.
