mmmm Gerard Butler in a leather kilt. :)

I feel much the same way about sex scenes. To me, what's hot is the situation and the build up, often the dialogue. The act itself without that is pretty flat. I love sex when it's well written, but when it isn't I often skim it.

Azteclady - that's so true! It's so much about connection and if the sex enhances that, or tells you who the characters are - it really works.

Anonymous - thank you for piping up to add that!

Tina - LOL, yes.

Okay, I'm back with an on topic comment now.

With a bit of a detour as a prelude to the actual comment, of course (brevity, not my thing).

Yesterday my 15yo daughter picked up and started reading one of the dozens (hundreds?) of books lying around my bedroom. I thought she would read the blurb, shrug, and put it down, as she's done before. This time, she kept going and going and going (it is a GREAT book, really), and has not let the book out of her sight since. It's such a good book, I'm bouncing with joy that's she's reading it.

And then it hit me--just now, in fact--that there are one or two sex scenes in it. Funny, I can't tell you exactly how many there are, even though I've re-read this book close to a dozen times. You know why I can't? Because when I think of this book I think of the characters, the story, the setting, the craft; and while the sex scenes that ARE there are necessary and important to the development of character, relationship, and story, they are not THE one thing that makes the book.

So now I'm happy my daughter is reading what I consider a great book, while the Catholic girl in me is blushing knowing that she'll eventually read the sex scenes.

Ah well, they do have to grow up--and I was reading plenty of adult stuff much younger than 15. I can hope she'll turn out okay.

Right?

Azteclady - you are SO correct!

Pam - I do agree that a scene just tossed in does read that way.

Amie - I read across genres and I find myself more and more picky about what erotic stuff I read over time.

JSL - Yes to all that!

My pet peeves with sex in books is where it doesn't fit, or seems like the author is trying too hard. The conversation is stilted, the scene awkward, and feels like it came out of no where.

What Pam said...unnecessary sex. Not that I've never lost control of my characters or anything but I think, as you already said, it is what it is and sometimes it is not so hot, not so sharp focused, not so in your face and that's okay.

Ridiculous set-ups/meets of characters who immediately boff each other because they're so hot. If I didn't care about them before, I don't care about them having sex and you probably just made me laugh (and not in a good way) :D

I'll be honest and say I don't read a lot of erotic romance/erotica because, well, it makes me neurotic and then I start worrying because I might not have enough sex or it's not this or it's not that...I just value my sanity too much I guess LOL
