Marissa,

Missed out on answering yesterday! I do go to see movies that just scream the need for the big screen appearance. But I also rent them and also TiVo them off HBO, etc. My next big screen showing with be this next weekend with the hubby. We're going to see 10,000 BC.

Theaters for anything that blows up or for the kids. They get such a kick out of seeing it huge-like. And then I still get an opportunity for buttery popcorn. Otherwise it's DVD. Lurve the extras.

You know what I actually love... the drive in theatres. We have an old one about half an hour away I think it's actually the only one left in Ontario. And I absolutely love going. And it's much cheaper and more comfortable. I almost forgot about my drive in. I wish their were still more of them.

I love going to movies, but it doesn't seem to matter because I go to only one a year, on average. In fact, after a lot of movie talk, I realized I only saw one in 2007, and that was the Golden Compass.
Sometimes schools or big cities will play movies for free, which is nice. (Or for $3). There's a really nice theater close to where I live which has an "early bird" special - where the first showing for every movie is $5 (it used to be $4 or less!) - which is nice, but it's only during the school year, and that's hard to fit around work/class schedules.
I'm even worse with the costs- I find that most libraries now get new DVD releases, so if I know a movie is coming out on DVD, I'll try to reserve it early on and watch it for free - then I can decide if I'll want to buy it or not. (Sometimes this doesn't work, because people treat library items so badly and the movie won't play.)
I would like to see The Other Boleyn Girl, and Dark Knight in theaters ... but we'll see.
As a student and one who didn't leave undergrad all that long ago... I'm still used to people sneaking in food, or sneaking in candy myself. I once snuck in one of those large boxes of animal cookies (long story) - but the most impressive, one friend once snuck in a dozen krispy kreme donuts, and another snuck in an entire meal - 3 sub sandwiches. Of course, some places might not care as much. On the opening day for one of the X -Men or Matrix movies (maybe Star Wars?) a friend walked in with about $30 worth of candy. The theater was in the same plaza as a target, and in order to get seats you had to show up more than an hour early - so he killed time by buying candy. I'm still not quite sure how he got it all in... Yeah, I guess my friends and I are punk kids :-X.

I haven't seen a movie in a movie theater since the original Star Wars. I guess I would have to say DVD, tho I prefer to read as opposed to watching a movie.

DVD - I cannot remember the last time we went out to see a movie. With the dvd you can pause the movie and go back if you miss something. We don't watch a lot of mainstream tv, but we love a really good movie every now and then.

And you can lie on the couch and kick back rather than sit in those small uncomfortable chairs and your feet don't stick to the floor at home!! Hee!

Theaters priced themselves out of my interest zone years ago. My husband likes to see movies in the theater but the cost has reached the point where he feels he has to justify it, so if we do go it's usually matinee price.

I now feel so old, but when I can watch a movie at home and get take out, wine and chocolate for less than a trip to the theater, the home experience is more compelling. Plus, at home the sound is not so loud I have to wear ear plugs.

Marissa, ain't that 'free shipping' thang just fab? You don't want to know how often I'll tweak the monthly budget here just to get to the magical $25...
