At the risk of sounding cheap, it costs a mini-fortune to go to the movie theater anymore! Has anyone else noticed that? By the time you buy your ticket, get popcorn and a soda– for TWO– it costs a good $40.00. Now while a movie can be entertaining, I sure can find a better way to spend $40.00–which is why I only go to the theater for movies that are a “must-see” movie.
For example, in the theater now is Vantage Point, The Spiderwick Chronicles, and Jumper all of which look highly entertaining and ones I want to see, but of the three I’d probably only go to the theater to see one of them, Vantage Point, because while it’s not a guaranteed “like”, it does have better potential than the others–for me that is.
An upcoming movie that I will definitely see is Untraceable– looks really good and Diane Lane is a great actress. A have-to-see is Sex & The City, gotta see what’s happening with the fab four. Another is Wanted with Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman. It looks totally action-packed and I think Angelina Jolie can totally pull off the bad-ass chick.
Not sure what else is upcoming, but those are the ones I will go to the theater to see that I know about. The others, I’ll rent on DVD. *shrug* To me, it’s just too costly anymore to be able to go see movies in the theater, so when I do, I want to see a movie that packs a punch.
How about you? Theater VS DVD?

money has always been tight so hubby and i havent been to a movie in years.. we do have a gift subsription to netflix, which i havent decided if i will keep up. Its great, but we have satelite payperview if theres something we really want to watch.. once in a while we wait to buy a dvd if its something we really want. Mostly we watch tv… were boring..lol..
but like you say movie theaters are super expensive and its money well spent somewhere else..

I don’t go to the theatre’s much anymore maybe only once a year now. The price is absolutely ridiculous. On top of which I just enjoy a movie more seated comfortably in my own home. I can eat what I want, recline in my recliner and fully enjoy my movie. I watch it when I want, I can skip all the previews and I can pause it to go pee. The volume isn’t absolutely deafening (which is actually one of the main reason’s I no longer go to the theatres. It is simply too loud and actually hurts my ears).
Yup I’m getting old I guess, I would just much rather watch a movie my way. lol.

DVD for the win, here.
I find the temperature in theaters just above freezing–which means I can’t concentrate fully on the movie. Plus there are people talking, pushing seats, cell phones ringing, and I have a choice of missing a chunk of the movie to go pee, or hold it in and be distracted by it.
And if I really like the movie and want to watch it again? Meh.
Plus, have you noticed how many great movies you can find on DVD for under ten dollars if you wait a year or so?
So I rather get new book releases asap, and wait for the movies.

DVD for me too, unless its a movie that I really really want to see or its one of those movies that you just know would be better on the big screen. I prefer to spend my money on more important things like books!
instead of at the movies

Looks like I’m not alone in this feeling. I MUCH prefer DVD myself, because like Azteclady said, what if you want to watch it again? You can’t stay for an encore or watch it the next day at the same price of rental. Generally, the only movies I will go to the theater for are the ones that you just know (like Jessie said) are better on the big screen. Like the Matrix movies… so much better on big screen… though I still watch them all the freaking time at home. LOL
Jolene- I, too, watch a lot of TV (I love TV! Lost, American Idol, House, Law & Order SVU!) There are some movies you just have to get from the video place on release day or at least the following weekend, ones you’ve been waiting for.
Jade- See, my husband is seriously half deaf, though he’d never admit it, so movie theater loudness or home loudness, not much difference. Sometimes I can put ear plugs in, not snugly in the canal, but just in there loosely, and can still hear plain as day but at a level I prefer. Yes, he needs hearing aids but try to get him to admit that. Men! LOL
Azteclady- I’m with you… I’d rather buy the new release books, or even ones I’ve been meaning to buy than spend $40 on a trip to the theater. Me and the DH can split the money, he can have $20 for whatever he wants, and I’ll take the other $20 for books, add another $5 and I get free shipping from Amazon.com. Wheee! LOL

Marissa, ain’t that ‘free shipping’ thang just fab? You don’t want to know how often I’ll tweak the monthly budget here just to get to the magical $25…

Theaters priced themselves out of my interest zone years ago. My husband likes to see movies in the theater but the cost has reached the point where he feels he has to justify it, so if we do go it’s usually matinee price.
I now feel so old,
but when I can watch a movie at home and get take out, wine and chocolate for less than a trip to the theater, the home experience is more compelling. Plus, at home the sound is not so loud I have to wear ear plugs.

And you can lie on the couch and kick back rather than sit in those small uncomfortable chairs and your feet don’t stick to the floor at home!! Hee!

DVD - I cannot remember the last time we went out to see a movie. With the dvd you can pause the movie and go back if you miss something. We don’t watch a lot of mainstream tv, but we love a really good movie every now and then.

I haven’t seen a movie in a movie theater since the original Star Wars. I guess I would have to say DVD, tho I prefer to read as opposed to watching a movie.

I love going to movies, but it doesn’t seem to matter because I go to only one a year, on average. In fact, after a lot of movie talk, I realized I only saw one in 2007, and that was the Golden Compass.
Sometimes schools or big cities will play movies for free, which is nice. (Or for $3). There’s a really nice theater close to where I live which has an “early bird” special - where the first showing for every movie is $5 (it used to be $4 or less!) - which is nice, but it’s only during the school year, and that’s hard to fit around work/class schedules.
I’m even worse with the costs- I find that most libraries now get new DVD releases, so if I know a movie is coming out on DVD, I’ll try to reserve it early on and watch it for free - then I can decide if I’ll want to buy it or not. (Sometimes this doesn’t work, because people treat library items so badly and the movie won’t play.)
I would like to see The Other Boleyn Girl, and Dark Knight in theaters … but we’ll see.
As a student and one who didn’t leave undergrad all that long ago… I’m still used to people sneaking in food, or sneaking in candy myself. I once snuck in one of those large boxes of animal cookies (long story) - but the most impressive, one friend once snuck in a dozen krispy kreme donuts, and another snuck in an entire meal - 3 sub sandwiches. Of course, some places might not care as much. On the opening day for one of the X -Men or Matrix movies (maybe Star Wars?) a friend walked in with about $30 worth of candy. The theater was in the same plaza as a target, and in order to get seats you had to show up more than an hour early - so he killed time by buying candy. I’m still not quite sure how he got it all in… Yeah, I guess my friends and I are punk kids :-X.

You know what I actually love… the drive in theatres. We have an old one about half an hour away I think it’s actually the only one left in Ontario. And I absolutely love going. And it’s much cheaper and more comfortable. I almost forgot about my drive in. I wish their were still more of them.

Theaters for anything that blows up or for the kids. They get such a kick out of seeing it huge-like. And then I still get an opportunity for buttery popcorn. Otherwise it’s DVD. Lurve the extras.

Marissa,
Missed out on answering yesterday! I do go to see movies that just scream the need for the big screen appearance. But I also rent them and also TiVo them off HBO, etc. My next big screen showing with be this next weekend with the hubby. We’re going to see 10,000 BC.

Fuck you all, such a bunch of idiots! I wish you would all die slowly of ghonnoreah! Just kidding……dvd’s all the way for me bitches! So much cheaper than the theatre, and I can have my cock sucked by a hooker while snorting a line of coke from the comfort of my own home……you get kicked out of the theatre for that everytime!
