I’ve got some questions for you all today, and I’ll answer them for you as well. I’m just curious what everyone is reading out there, genres, etc.
What do you like to read? Specifically, what genre(s)?
Do you like romantic suspense? If you do, do you prefer it where the suspense isn’t the main focus of the story but rather the romance? Or do you like lots of suspense and the romance secondary?
I enjoy romantic suspense a lot, and I prefer it when the suspense is light, where it’s not the main focus of the story. I tend to write this way as well. RS comes in secondary to contemporaries for me.
Do you like paranormal? What type? Vampire? Werewolves? Demons? Angels? Witches? What’s your favorite?
I like some paranormal, but not a whole lot as of late because it seems like that’s all there is out there. If I read paranormal, I prefer vamps to wolfies. I’m going to be trying Meljean Brook’s Demon Angel this week. I picked up a while back but haven’t gotten to it on my TBR pile. No surprise there. I also like witches. They’d come in second to vampires I think.
Do you read category romance? Silhouette Special Edition? Silhouette Desire? Harlequin Blaze? Silhouette Romantic Suspense? Harlequin Historical? Harlequin Superromance? Etc.
Yes, I do. I especially like Silhouette Special Edition, Silhouette Desire, and Silhouette Romantic suspense. I think they have the best storylines for my taste.
Do you read inspirational stories?
No, I don’t. I’d probably like them if I read them, but I like some sex in my stories. *shrug*
Do you like contemporaries? With a light plot, mainly relationship-based? Or do you like a little more plot, say the characters come with a lot of baggage and they need to work on that before they get too deep into the romance?
Contemporaries are my favorite. I prefer both types, relationship- and plot-based, but the characterization is what really works for me. I tend to like the works of authors such as Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Nora Roberts, Susan Mallery, Rachel Gibson… and more. I like a variety, but this is the genre I prefer above all others.
Do you read chick lit? From which author(s)? What do you like about it?
I read some, but only stories where the heroine isn’t completely selfish and self-absorbed. Totally annoying that. A good example of a book I consider sorta chick-litty that I really enjoyed is Ronda Thompson’s Confessions of a Werewolf Supermodel. Great story.
Do you read women’s fiction?
Yes, I do. There are times I look for a deeply emotional book and that’s when I grab the women’s fiction, though I like the story to have some romance to it as well. I found Harlequin Next has some really good women’s fiction stories. Two that stand out are Marie Ferrarella’s Second Time Around and Jennifer Archer’s The Me I Used To Be. Phenomenal stories. Too bad the line was discontinued. Le sigh.
Do you read historicals? Western historicals? Medieval historicals? Regency historicals? etc.
Yes, some. I like some western historicals- Sarah McCarty comes to mind. Medieval historicals- HIGHLANDERS BABY!- and even some regency/European. They aren’t my first fave genre, but I enjoy them when I read them. Medieval Highlanders are my fave.
Do you read young adult books?
Some. I read some that I thought were adult by accident by Meg Cabot. One was Size 12 Is Not Fat and it was good. I’m not sure if this was adult or YA, but it as a good story. I’d read more of her stuff. I’ve also read Stephenie Meyer, just the first one. Good stuff.
Do you prefer first person (”I” which has only one point of view, generally the heroine) or third person (”he/she”)? Does it bother you when there are more points of view than the hero and heroine?
I prefer third person. I do read first person books, but third person will always be #1 to me. I like the POV of both the H & H.
So there are my questions to you and my answers. Your turn.

Yes, I do.
Do you read inspirational stories?
I’ve read a few. They aren’t my favorite reads.
Do you like contemporaries? With a light plot, mainly relationship-based? Or do you like a little more plot, say the characters come with a lot of baggage and they need to work on that before they get too deep into the romance?
I do read contemporaries, but it is my second favorite genre.

I occasionally read chick-lit.
Do you read women’s fiction?

yes to everything except Inspirational, nonfiction (with few exceptions) and series romance — the Harlequin and Silhouette that you mentioned.
I don’t have any clear-cut preferences in terms of POV, genre, or whatnot. Just that it be a good story that’s well written and easy to fall into. (and I do make exceptions for some that aren’t easy to fall into)

I like to read romance- and I read in the genre almost exclusively. I’ll also read/re-read classics and children’s books. I just bought the Little House books in a set.
I like paranormal, and enjoy it, but I’m not so happy it’s quite as big as it is now. I feel that its flooding the market, and I miss other types.
I do read category romance - mostly Silhouette Desire, Harlequin Blaze, and some Harlequin Presents and Silhouette Special Editions. Or Harlequin Special Release - mostly I go by authors I know.
I don’t read inspirational stories either - haha, for the same reason.
I love contemporary books, and I’m a huge fan of Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Susan Mallery, and Rachel Gibson. I have a lot/most of their books. I also like Kathy Love and Diane Castell’s books as well.
I don’t really read chick lit or women’s fiction - where would Jennifer Crusie fit in?
As to historicals… my favorites are regencies. When I really started reading romances, I read regencies exclusively. It took a few years before I ventured into contemporaries. I like westerns as well, but don’t really care for medieval books.
I love Cynthia Voight and Madeline L’Engle’s books for young adults (I guess I call them “kid books” because I read them as a kid.)
I prefer third person - first person seems too distracting, ironically - like a shirt that doesn’t quite fit.

Hi, Marissa!!! Hmmm…well, I love paranormals–always have, probably always will. I also do enjoy romantic suspense novels, generally going with 50% suspense and 50% romance. I don’t like reading 1st person point of view–I like to know what’s happening inside the minds of other characters. Series books–I read them every now and then. Once upon a time, some were auto-buys, but my tastes have changed a bit, and I generally prefer single-titles.

I’m big on paranormals and futuristic, they spark the imagination and take me on a reading adventure.
I read YA’s for a refreshing read, the ones I read are usually light.
I sometimes read contemps because they have many comedies, we always need a good laugh.
1st person is my preference, it helps me get lost in a book instead of just being a voyeur.
Hugs, Danette

Do you like romantic suspense? If you do, do you prefer it where the suspense isn’t the main focus of the story but rather the romance? Or do you like lots of suspense and the romance secondary?
I LOVE RS but I’m a bit burnt out on it right now–maybe due in part to the current wip having some suspense in it too. I tend to NOT read in the genre I write a lot. <–bad grammar alert. I prefer more suspense than romance.
Do you like paranormal? What type?
I think i fall more to the Urban Fantasy end of the spectrum though I do like paras. I’m way behind in my para reading but I’d have to say vampires to wolves. and I’m a huge Stephanie Rowe fan–not sure where she falls in the spectrum but she’s hysterical
Do you read category romance?
Not so much though I do like the Blaze serioes.
Do you read inspirational stories?
No because I normally don’t go looking for them (so that’s not to say I wouldn’t) but there’s one on my wish list I’m DYING to get–Leaving Nash Vegas.
Do you like contemporaries? With a light plot, mainly relationship-based? Or do you like a little more plot, say the characters come with a lot of baggage and they need to work on that before they get too deep into the romance?
I’m with you…I like light and heavy and I’m a HUGE SEP fangirl
Do you read chick lit? From which author(s)? What do you like about it?
Yes…I love Jane Green, but tend to lean toward the women’s fictiony end of the spectrum–IE Karen Brichoux
Do you read women’s fiction?
Yes absolutely
Do you read historicals? Western historicals? Medieval historicals? Regency historicals? etc.
Not so much anymore
Do you read young adult books?
OMG YES!!!!! I HART YA (though the Meyer book didn’t really work for me).
Do you prefer first person (â€I”which has only one point of view, generally the heroine) or third person (â€he/sheâ€)? Does it bother you when there are more points of view than the hero and heroine?
I prefer first person
And no, multiple first person POV’s dont bother me if they’re done well.
