Better Late than Never

&^% I wrote a long post and it vanished on me…

So here we go again. Well, I’m late with this blog post. I’ve been late with lots of stuff lately, mainly blog posts, and all my mailings of books and contest prizes…its my mindset…

So, because I’m a lazy bugger, I’m going to blog about my book order I made and will hopefully have in the next couple of days…lots of awesome books…

1. the whole Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh (courtesy of my BFF)
2. Dead Reign - by TA Pratt - book 3 in the Marla Mason sorcerer series - awesome series
3. Hell to Pay - by Simon Green - book 7 in the Nightside series - this series is like crack, I can’t get enough
4. Soulless - by Christopher Golden - horror YA - sounds really spooky
5. The Devouring - by Simon Holt - paranormal YA - the cover rocks, I had to buy it
6. Marked - by PC and Kristen Cast - paranormal YA- love me some PC
7. Midnighters - by Scott Westerfield - paranormal YA - loved his Uglies series

As you can see I’m buying and reading a lot of YA. I love reading YA, and I think its because I have no expectations. I’m surprised every time I read one. I’ve liked every book I’ve read so far this year, every one. Some more than others, but not once have I been disappointed. They are all so fresh and original and I am utterly enthralled with the stories. There are no overused tropes and contrite plot threads used over and over and over again, that I’ve been seeing lately in other genres.

Do you read YA? Why? What is it about the books that seem so fresh?

Are you going to see the movie Twilight? Did you read the book?

I’m with you Vivi….I’ve read the entire House of Night series…pretty darn good…I just picked up Uglies by Scott W….can’t wait to read it..my problem is that I have way too many books in my TBR pile. Can’t wait to see Twilight…I haven’t read and Nalini…but I’ve heard she’s awesome and met her at Nationals…she’s a little itty biddy thing and really cute!

Hi Vivi. I love YA, especially YA sci/fantasy. There is always such potential and hope and life-altering challenges for YA characters, and young love is it’s own sweet loveliness, if that makes sense. I love receiving books I’ve ordered - it is like a very special gift to myself each time.

I read some YA books - nothing recently though - but I’ve been buying up the sets I read as a kid - Little House, Anne of Green Gables, the Emily books, Lloyd Alexander’s and also The Dark is Rising series :)
I haven’t read the Twilight books, and likely won’t go see the movie :X

I LURVE YA fiction and I’ll read pretty much any sub-genre therein (historical, sf, paranormal, contemporary, romance, etc.). So much more variety than when I was a teen.

Yes, I read some YA, my favorites are “Twilight,” and “Blood and Chocolate.”

I also have a few favorite Kid novels, like the Harry Potter series (though it was probably YA by the last book or two) , and the July Blume Fudge series, which is definitely a Kid novel. But holy crap, I LOVE the Fudge books. So funny. And I have a writer friend who HAS a real life Superfudge.

Judy Blume, not July Blume. Stupid typo demons. I’m going to have to exorcise my keyboard.

  7. Little Willow Says:

Soulless by Christopher Golden is SO good - detailed, inventive, action-packed - but not only does it have all of the elements of a good horror novel, but a good novel, period. He really fleshes out the characters (no pun intended, given that it’s a zombie novel) in this and in ALL of his novels.

Have you read any of his other books? Golden has written for nearly every age group (mostly for horror/dark fantasy adults, but also plenty of YA, some of which are realistic fiction and mysteries in addition to his paranormal stories, and some juvenile sci-fi/fantasy as well) and he always tells a great story and populates his world(s) with tremendous characters.

    Midnighters is very cool. Enjoy!

I loved the book and I’m going ot see the movie with my 13 year old daughter who loved it as well

  9. Linda Says:

I love YA fiction as well. Especially paranormal YA. It’s a lot of fun for my teenager and I when we’ve read the same ones and can talk about them.
I have Midnighters in my TBR pile right now too. Enjoy!

Could not finish twilight–will probably wait for the movie on DVD.

Just picked up The Hunger Games this weekend :)

AS to why I read YA–i think there are (or at least seem to be) fewer boundaries. More genre-stretching and rule-bending. But maybe it’s just me. *shrugs*
